Excellence in clinical neurosurgery: practice and judgment make perfect.
نویسنده
چکیده
Having discussed the importance of excellence in research in neurosurgery in my previous lecture, I will now make a strong case for the pursuit of excellence in clinical neurosurgery. Here, the adage ‘‘practice makes perfect’’ will be used time and again to underscore the important roles of repetition of manual and intellectual tasks to achieve excellence in our subspecialty. To this adage, however, I have also added the concept of ‘‘judgment,’’ which comes into play whenever we look after our patients with neurosurgical disease. It takes judgment to know when to operate, but perhaps more important, when not to operate. Even the most skillful technical neurosurgeons run the risk of unexpected patient outcomes if good judgment is not applied to the patients on whom they operate. It is the combination of practice and judgment that perhaps sets us apart as neurosurgeons from other professionals in which a lapse in judgment in their disciplines would not have the far-reaching ramifications that it does for us and our patients. Some of the other disciplines I will be reviewing here in terms of practice making perfect include performance piano and professional tennis and golf as examples.

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...
متن کاملDeveloping a 3D Reconstruction System for Surgical Planning in Neurovascular Surgery (In press)
Introduction: Neurovascular lesions may cause death or disability. Some of them are operable, but surgical approaches to these lesions are complicated and proper access is crucial. A few numbers of these surgeries occur in every resident education period and their experience for operating these lesions may be quite inadequate. Using new technologies like 3D-restructure of vascular lesion images...

متن کاملMeasuring excellence in clinical translation: what are the top works in the field of neurosurgery?
Excellence in clinical translation may be found in those studies that have had a particularly large impact in how neurosurgery is currently practiced. Although there are various ways to identify such studies, we used the number of times an article has been cited as an indicator of the impact that article has had in our field. Here, we highlight some of the findings from our study of 106 article...
